Replacement of the Minoru Aquatic Centre and Minoru Place Activity Centre were among Council’s top priorities for its 2011-2014 term. The Minoru Aquatic Centre is near the end of its life and is lacking in many of the amenities found in aquatic centres today. The Minoru Place Activity Centre is inadequate to meet the long-term needs of Richmond’s rapidly growing population of older adults. Replacing both centres on a new site ensures there will be no disruption of service to users of the current facilities.
On May 8, 2017 Council approved the demolition of the current Minoru Aquatic Centre once the new Minoru Centre for Active Living is opened. The future use of the site of the Minoru Aquatic Centre will be determined through the current Minoru Park Vision Plan process. The future use of the Minoru Place Activity Centre (Seniors Centre) is being studied; an assessment of the building condition is underway and there will be a process to determine potential future uses for the facility.
Both facilities will continue to operate until the new facility is open to the public.
The new Aquatic Centre is planned to provide significantly more water than what is available at the existing Minoru Aquatic Centre. The focus will be on leisure, lessons and aquatic fitness, play and therapeutic uses. Along with two 25-metre tanks, the design includes a large leisure pool with features such as a lazy river and a variety of spray features, two large hot tubs along with a cold plunge pool and saunas.
